Federal Legislation

Click on links below for info on current federal legislation.

"Lobbying 101"

1.  Most likely you will speak to a legislative assistant.  They will pass on info to your legislator.
2. Don't assume they know about all of the legislation.  Be sure to provide bill numbers and a few quick facts.
3. Senate bills have a prefix of S.  House bills have a prefix of HR.
4.  Follow up with your emails.  If you don't get a reply, call and ask to speak with the legislative assistant who handles animal issues.
5.  Educate yourself on the issues. The more you know, the better.  Adding a personal story helps. For example, puppy mll issues are important to me because I rescued and rehabilitated a dog from a puppy mill. Visit www.hsus.org to learn more about effective lobbying and issues.
6. The Humane Society Legislative Fund publishes a Humane Scorecard for
Congress each year.
Use this as a tool when contacting your legislator. For example: In NC, HSUS has over 250,000 members. NC legislators have low humane scores, which means animal advocates are not speaking up or legislators are not listening to their constituents. Check out their score at http://www.fund.org/humanescorecard/
